Floppy Disks

Do not place heavy objects on a floppy disk.
|

Do not write on floppies unless you are using a felt-tip pen. Write on the label, and then place it on the floppy.

|
Do not open the disk's shutter (generally the silver rectangle at the bottom of the disk) or touch the recording surface of the disk (which is covered by the disk's shutter when it is not in use).
|

|
Do not expose a floppy disk to excessive heat, sunlight, or cold.
|
<
|
Do not place floppies near magnetic fields like speakers, telephone headsets, monitors, calculators, etc.
|
<
|
Do not eat, smoke, or drink near a floppy disk.
|
<
|
Do keep disks in a storage tray when you are not using them.
|
<
|
Do insert the floppy into the disk drive carefully, label side up and shutter end in first.
|
<
|
Do wait until the light on the floppy drive has gone out to take the disk out of the drive.

DVDs
Many of the things involved in CD handling also apply for DVDs. The following are DVD specific handling tips.

Do store DVDs in DVD-approved cases when the DVD isn't in use. (Look for the DVD logo on the tray insert.)

|
Do store DVD cases vertically not horizontally.
|
<
|
Never store DVDs in CD jewel cases.
|
<
|
Do not apply adhesive labels to a DVD.
|
<
|
Do not store DVDs in cardboard or paper sleeves. If you use sleeves use ones made of soft woven material.
|
<
|
Do not overfill binders if used to store DVDs.
