Our Agency got it's start in January 1971 by the kindness of Father William Atkinson, Mrs. Harriett Davis, and Mrs. Charlotte Partin. The Sumter Developmental Learning Center was started on January 10, 1971 at St. Judes Catholic Church. The first Board of Directors was formed in 1973. The county board system was introduced in 1977. In 1993 the state government restructuring expanded our mission to include individuals with autism and head and spinal cord injuries. At that time the name was changed to the current Sumter County Disabilities And Special Needs Board.
