Biographical Sketch

My parents moved to Goshen, Indiana, just prior to my senior year in high school. I wanted to stay at Kinross for my senior year but mom and dad decided it be best that I join them in Indiana. It was tough changing school during your last year in high school but one consolation was that I got to play football.

C.J. gave an account of our parents in his autobiographical sketch. We too try to get to Dallas each summer to visit Dad.

After graduating from Goshen High School in 1956 I entered Goshen College in the fall of that year. My major my first year was in engineering. This soon changed to education and I graduated from Goshen College in 1961 with an education degree and a social studies major.

While at Goshen College I met a young lady from Kidron, Ohio, who was majoring in elementary education. Ann J. Sommer and I were married in August of 1959. While I was completing my last year at Goshen College, Ann taught 2nd grade at Waterford Elementary School.

In August of 1961, we moved to Columbus, Indiana, where Ann taught 1st grade while I worked on a masters degree at Indiana University in Bloomington.

We headed back to Ohio in the summer of 1962 where I taught American History at Wooster High School. Ann taught 1st grade at Wooster Township Elementary School. The class of 1964, of which I taught as juniors and served as class advisor, is celebrating with a 30 year reunion this summer.

Our first child, Karen Leslie, was born April 6, 1964. Karen is now an R.N. working in labor and delivery at Aultman Hospital in Canton. She married Larry Wald in June of 1985. Karen and Larry are the parents of our first grandchild, Hannah, born in June of 1992.

After having taught at Wooster High for two years, I was asked to join the family livestock feed business in Kidron in the summer of 1964. It was soon evident to me that I missed teaching after a few months full time in the business world. In the summer of 1966 we accepted an assignment with our church to teach at Alliance Secondary School in Dodoma, Tanzania - East Africa. At that boys boarding school, in the middle of country, I taught geography, English as a 2nd language, and Bible knowledge. The three years in Africa were meaningful for our family in a number of ways. It gave us global viewpoints and an understanding of different cultures we never had before. Also it gave us an opportunity to enjoy the scenery and wildlife of a beautiful part of the world. Our family increased during this time as Matt was born in April of 1968 in a "bush" hospital about 20 miles outside of Dodoma. Matt is now a C.P.A. working in Goshen, Indiana. In December of 1989 he married Lisa Ross. Not only was the experience in the late 60's a real positive one but a return pilgrimage in 1991 of the six of us (Milt, Ann, Karen, Larry, Matt and Lisa), was a trip of a lifetime.

Coming back from Africa in 1969 saw me teaching Social Studies and coaching football and basketball at Dalton Intermediate School. In 1986 I moved across the parking lot to become principal of Dalton Elementary, a K-5 school with 25 staff and 350 students. After six years at D.E.S. I moved back across the parking lot to be principal of Dalton Intermediate. Presently I am finishing up my second year at D.I.S. with three days of school remaining in this school year.

Ann has been teaching 2nd grade at Kidron Elementary School for over 20 years. She enjoys travel, quilting, shopping, interior decorating and taking care of our two grandchildren. Hannah Elizabeth was born to Karen and Larry in June of 1992 and Joshua Ross was born to Matt and Lisa in April of this year.

I am looking forward to seeing you soon.
